Seeing Through Derrick’s Eyes — POV Filming at Fika Coffee Bar

This week on Thompson Productions, we’re giving subscribers an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at a powerful creative choice in Word and Deed — POV (Point of View) filmmaking, and we captured it right on location at Fika Coffee Bar in Hampstead, MD.

In most films, we experience the story from an audience perspective, that is, watching scenes unfold as an observer. But sometimes, to draw viewers deeper into a character’s emotions, we shift the camera to see what they see, literally through their eyes.

In a dreamlike flashback from Derrick Miller’s past, I wanted the scene to feel personal and immersive, as if the viewer were experiencing the moment right along with him. So instead of our usual setup, we filmed the scene in first-person POV with Raymond Ritzau, who plays Derrick, holding the camera on a gimbal himself. The other actors looked directly into the lens as if they were looking into Derrick’s eyes.

In this Thompson Productions exclusive video, I walk you through what that process looked like.
You’ll see both:

  • Behind-the-scenes footage of us filming the scene in action
  • A direct cut from Derrick’s POV, showing just how realistic and emotionally engaging it is

It’s all part of what makes Word and Deed more than just a show. It’s a shared creative journey.
